II. Export of the Group of Goods
1. General export situation
In 2022, the group of processed industrial goods continued to maintain a stable growth, reaching 319.2 billion USD, accounting for 86% of total export turnover and up 10.1% over the previous year. At the same time, contributing 6/8 items with export turnover of over 10 billion USD of the whole country, including: phone exports reached 58 billion USD, up 0.8% over the previous year; computers, electronic products and components reached 55.5 billion USD, up 9.3%; machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts reached 45.8 billion USD, up 19.4%; textiles and garments reached 37.6 billion USD, up 14.7%; footwear of all kinds reached 23.9 billion USD, up 34.6%; transportation vehicles and spare parts reached 12 billion USD, up 12.9%.
2. Export of some industrial goods
2.1. Phones of all kinds and components
- Production:
In 2022, the number of phones produced is estimated at 210.5 million units, down 9.1% compared to 2021. The production value of phone components reached about VND 663.7 trillion, up 15.1% compared to 2021.
- About export markets:
In 2022, the main export markets of the group of phones and components are: China, the United States, the EU, Korea, UAE, Hong Kong.
China is Vietnam's largest export market with export turnover in 2022 reaching 16.3 billion USD, up 7.1% compared to 2021, accounting for 28% of total import turnover of commodity groups. Ranked second is the US market with a turnover of 11.9 billion USD, up 22.5%, accounting for 20.5% of total exports. Exports to the EU reached $6.5 billion, down 15.7% from last year, accounting for 11.2% of total exports. Exports to South Korea reached 5.05 billion USD, up 5.3% compared to 2021.
- Assessment:
In 2022, phones of all kinds and components hold the first position, accounting for the highest proportion in the total export turnover of the country. However, 2022 was a difficult year for the industry when the turnover of the commodity group only increased by 0.8% compared to 2021. The slowdown in phone exports was evident in the last months of the year when export orders fell sharply, despite the launch of some high-end flip smartphones such as the Samsung Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4. Weak demand has impacted the fulfillment of export targets of Samsung, Vietnam's largest phone manufacturer and exporter in the past year. The Group's export value in 2022 only fulfilled 94% of the plan.
According to forecasts by Counterpoint Research, in the first half of 2023, the global phone market will remain under recessionary pressure and demand may pick up in the last months of the year.
