b) Fruit and vegetable exports
According to statistics of the General Department of Vietnam Customs, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports in 2022 reached 3.37 billion USD, down 5.1% compared to 2021. In which: - China is the largest fruit and vegetable consumption market of Vietnam with a turnover of 1.53 billion USD, down 19.8% over the previous year, accounting for 45.4% of the total fruit and vegetable export turnover of the country. - Ranked second is the US market with export turnover of 247.8 million USD, up 11.2% over the same period in 2021, accounting for 7.4%.
- Next is Korea with a turnover of 180.8 million USD, up 14.8% compared to 2021; Thailand with export turnover reached 168.1 million USD, up 14.1%; Japan with export turnover reached 165.1 million USD, up 7.7%. Fruit and vegetable exports declined sharply in the Chinese market, but grew positively in other major export market areas thanks to positive effects from FTAs such as EVFTA, VKFTA... along with demand in countries recovering from disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In 2022, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable industry will receive a lot of positive information thanks to strengthening connectivity and expanding export markets. From 1/11/2022, bananas are officially exported to the Chinese market; previously, China also licensed Vietnam's passion fruit and durian products to be officially exported to this market from 7/2022; In addition, from 04/10/2022, fresh grapefruit has also been officially exported to the United States; In November 2022, green lemon and grapefruit were licensed for export to the New Zealand market, fresh longan to the Japanese market... The official export of these key fruits to major consumption markets such as China, the United States, Japan, and New Zealand will promote stronger growth of Vietnamese fruit and vegetable exports next year.
For China - Vietnam's largest fruit and vegetable consumption market, after more than 2 years of persevering the Zero Covid policy, China has also started to relax Covid-19 restrictions from December 7, 2022, contributing to helping fruit and vegetable exports to the Chinese market prosper in the coming time. The recovery of global demand for agricultural products is also a contributing factor to Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports growing positively in 2023, including exports to China and to fastidious markets such as the United States, Europe, Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand...
